A central part of my upskilling journey was doing Google Career Certificates’ Digital Marketing and E-Commerce course in the second half of 2022. I completed the course with an average mark of 92% across the seven modules. It provided me with a thorough and rigorous training that has set me up brilliantly for my work now as a digital marketer. It’s been an absolute game changer.

Through doing that I connected with Google Success Stories who interviewed me about my experience of doing this course. That conversation led to an opportunity for me to speak at “Be Inspired”, an online event for AllBright x Google’s Reignite Programme; where I was fortunate to share my story with their cohort of 50 learners, who are upskilling by doing the same Digital Marketing and E-Commerce course. It was a brilliant event focussing on non-linear, or ‘squiggly’ career paths – which may have included a setback, career break or pivot to produce uniquely interesting careers, and uniquely equipped people.

Following that, the AllBright Academy asked if I would mentor learners within its Reignite programme cohort. I jumped at the opportunity to support other women working towards completing the course, who have similar experiences to mine.

Being course mentor, I ran online mentoring sessions for up to five learners every couple of weeks where we discussed together the joys and challenges of learning, which covered motivation, problem-solving and goal-setting, with focus on preparing for what comes next once they’ve completed the course. I shared stories and encouragement from my own experience as well.

This pilot programme has seen 36% of learners finish early (within four months – the Trailblazers) and 58% finishing the course within the programme itself; wildly exceeding industry benchmarks (2-3%).

Alex came on board AllBright’s REIGNITE programme in partnership with Google, initially to speak on a panel and inspire a group of learners (women returning to the workforce), but her experience, support and relatability having completed the same certificate course was invaluable that we invited her back to take on the role of our programme mentor. We employed Alex to run several virtual mentor sessions with learners to further support their confidence, motivation, and technical questions about digital marketing. Alex was amazing to work with and very flexible when we had last minute changes to schedules, her support to the learners has been incredible and added another key layer to our programme
